Where to Find Free Parking in Geneva

5 min read

Free parking in central Geneva is genuinely rare, but it does exist. If you know where to look and when to park, you can save significant money. Here is a practical guide.

Free on Sundays: The Big One

The single most useful rule in Geneva: street parking in the white zone is free on Sundays and Swiss public holidays. This applies across virtually all of the city centre including Rive, Cornavin, Plainpalais and the old town.

Public holidays when parking is free in Geneva include: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Ascension, Whit Monday, National Day (1 August), Jeûne Genevois (September), Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Always check the current year's calendar.

Free Blue Zone Parking

The blue zone offers genuinely free parking for up to 90 minutes on weekdays (Mon-Fri 08:00-18:00) and Saturday mornings (08:00-12:00). Outside those hours, blue zone parking is free with no time limit.

You must display a parking disc (disque de stationnement) set to your arrival time. These are free and available from tabacs, garages and car accessory shops. Blue zones are found throughout Geneva, particularly in residential neighbourhoods.

Free Parking in Carouge

Carouge, the Sardinian-influenced municipality just south of Geneva, has significantly more free parking than the city centre. Many side streets in outer Carouge are either free or blue zone (90 min free). Trams 12 and 13 connect Carouge to central Geneva in around 10 minutes.

Free Parking in Suburban Geneva

Districts such as Lancy, Meyrin, Vernier and Onex have much more free on-street parking than central Geneva. If you are willing to park 20-30 minutes by tram from the centre, you can usually find free spaces.

However, always check signs carefully. Many suburban streets have become residential-permit zones in recent years, which exclude non-resident vehicles during specific hours.

The Cheapest Alternative: Park and Ride

If truly free parking is elusive, the Park and Ride (P+R) system at CHF 5/day is close to free and extremely practical. Your tram or bus ride into the city is included in the CHF 5 ticket, so the total cost of parking plus transport into the centre is less than most city centre car parks charge per hour.
